Abu Dhabi Midfield Terminal contruction contract signed

The construction companies join ADAC for the official contract signing. Riyad Kamal CEO Arabtec, H.E. Ali Majed Al Mansoori, Chairman of ADAC, Ali Haydar Ozak from TAV, and Munif Mahmoud from CCC.
Construction of the 700,000-square metre terminal building will start in the third quarter of 2012 and it is expected to be completed by 2017.
Speaking at the fomal signing ceremony yesterday, Ali Majid Al Mansouri, chairman of Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC), said: “Abu Dhabi Airports Company is looking ahead to five years of growth focusing on increasing traffic at Abu Dhabi International Airport and on expanding the airport’s infrastructure to support this growth.”
The midfield terminal was designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF), Ove Arup, NACO and BNP Associates. The construction project involves three major companies - TAV, CCC and Arabtec.
When complete, the Midfield Terminal will cater for 65 aircraft at a time, including the Airbus A-380. Check-in will have capacity for about 8,500 passengers per hour. The terminal will also provide 165 conventional counters and 48 self-service kiosks and will handle over 19,000 bags per hour. It will accommodate 136 security screening lanes for passengers with a further 25 for staff.
According to ADAC, the building will utilise 69,000 tonnes of steel, more than 680,000 cubic metres of concrete, and nearly 500,000 square metres of steel and glass, 135,000 tonnes of rebar, 360,000 square metres of suspended ceilings and 325,000 square metres of natural stone flooring.
During the construction process, the area immediately surrounding the MTB is also being developed to ensure the required infrastructure and facilities are available to support the operation of the MTB in 2017. These include the aircraft parking stands, terminal roadways, connecting roads to Abu Dhabi/Dubai highway, and utility plants. Procurement for these projects is currently underway to ensure delivery in phases between 2014 and 2016.
Passenger facilities and duty-free retail will include high-end commercial offerings across more than 18,000 square meters, including internationally renowned luxury goods and designer outlets, and almost 10,000 square meters of international restaurants and cafes, offering a wide range of styles and cuisines. Passenger facilities will also include over 27,500 square meters of airline hospitality lounges, a transit hotel and a heritage and culture museum.
