ICAO concludes in Riyadh

The last day marked a celebration to mark International Civil Aviation Day, after more than 579 bilateral and multilateral meetings and 521 agreements. 

Hosted by the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) of Saudi Arabia, the event was attended by 713 aviation leaders from 97 countries and organisations, making it the largest-ever ICAN.

The successful event featured several regional and global aviation policy and commercial announcements and agreements including the first Arab Air Transport Forum organised by Saudi Arabia in cooperation with the Arab Civil Aviation Organisation (ACAO), the first ICAN exhibition featuring pavilions from across the Saudi aviation sector, and a new Regional Safety Oversight Organisation for the Middle East & North Africa based in Riyadh to assist Member States on implementing the State Safety Programme (SSP).

Commenting on the success of the event, GACA President, His Excellency Abdulaziz Al Duailej said: “I was delighted to witness the dedication of participating nations to set the stage for a more resilient and interconnected global aviation industry. Several agreements were made, underscoring the spirit of collaboration and mutual understanding that defines the ICAO Air Services Negotiation Event. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was delighted to welcome all participating nations, delegates and stakeholders and thanks them for their active engagement and commitment to the success of the event.”

The President of the ICAO Council, Mr. Salvatore Sciacchitano commented: “I extend to all of you, Your Excellencies, and the delegations my sincere thanks for your participation in this crucial meeting, which reflects the spirit of fruitful cooperation amongst the international community, reflecting the fundamental element in developing the aviation industry.”

ICAN is a major civil aviation event held once a year allowing member states to gather to conduct bilateral, regional and multilateral air service negotiations and consultations. 

The event also provides policy makers, regulators, air operators and service providers to network and swap notes. 

The next ICAN will be held in Malaysia 2024.
