SITA looks at blockchain technology for seamless travel

SITA is looking at the potential of blockchain technology to give travellers a secure token for travelling through airports and across borders.

The token would eliminate the need for multiple documents when travelling, acting as a virtual passport on mobile and wearable devices to reduce costs and complexity.

“It could enable biometrics to be used across borders, and at all airports, without the passenger’s details being stored by the various authorities,” said Jim Peters, CTO, SITA.

The token will contain biometric and personal traveller information, which would result in passengers simply having to scan their face and device as verification.

SITA is working with ShoCard to demonstrate these concepts.

“Today we are showing how our identity platform, built using the blockchain, combined with SITA’s unique air transport and border management solutions could improve traveler experience while ensuring security,” said Armin Ebrahimi, founder and CEO, ShoCard.

The use of the token allows passenger information to remain private and secure, and eliminates the need to an authority to process the data.

“Whether it is used for currency or travel it is simply a record of events that is shared between multiple parties but most importantly once information is entered, it cannot be changed, and privacy and security are by design,” said Peters.
