End of NGO Aviation Sans Frontières' Ebola mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The UN coordinator announces the end of the epidemic in the area Djera, Democratic Republic of Congo. After 3 months of air rescue alongside the organizations on the ground, the end of this mission allows ASF to consider a commitment in other areas affected by the epidemic.

The UN coordinator of humanitarian action in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Moustapha Soumare, announced the end of the Ebola epidemic that affected since August 24 the very isolated area of Djera, placed under quarantine, where more than 50,000 people live.

Therefore, ASF announces that its mission will end in December 2014. This last month of mission will be devoted to accompany the return to normal health and food situation and the return of humanitarians locally engaged. Aviation Sans Frontières began its mission in coordination with the UN on September 1st. Based in Mbandaka, the team of ASF conducted for 76 flights, transported 100 experts and health specialists and more than 18 tons of medicine, medical supplies and food for 12 humanitarian and international organizations.
 
"Humanitarian teams have overcome enormous logistical challenges to heal the sick and to protect the inhabitants of the area", welcomed the UN coordinator for humanitarian action, Moustapha Soumare.
 
"It is a great satisfaction to ASF for having once again demonstrated its responsiveness and rapid mobilization in difficult to access areas," says Pierre Lacorne, President of ASF. "Our volunteer teams of pilots are trained to respect the Ebola protocol and we
guarantee through our Air Carrier Certificate maximum security conditions, coupled with the commitment of an NGO activist. We are ready to engage further to facilitate international action against the Ebola virus.”
