ABU DHABI: Sustainability and Innovation take flight
The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), in collaboration with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), officially opened the fourth edition of ICAO’s Global Implementation Support Symposium (GISS) this morning in Abu Dhabi.

Set against the backdrop of the emirate’s vibrant culture and rich aviation heritage, this year’s event focuses on sustainability and artificial intelligence (AI) while ensuring the continued safety and security of aviation operations.
For the first time, GISS is being held alongside the Global Sustainable Aviation Marketplace (GSAM)—a landmark ICAO initiative aimed at accelerating the global shift towards alternative and low-carbon fuels in international aviation.
The opening ceremony featured a spectacular display of bands, horses, and aerial performances, culminating in an awe-inspiring moment as skydivers and wingsuit pilots descended, carrying the flags of the UAE, ICAO, and GSAM. The display was orchestrated by Skydive Dubai and Action Flight, the UAE’s premier aerobatic display team and the country’s first commercial aerobatic passenger flight operation.
Highlighting the UAE’s leading role in shaping the future of global aviation, H.E. Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri addressed delegates, stating: “The UAE’s role in hosting such a major and influential international event reflects its pioneering position in the civil aviation sector at both regional and global levels. It also underscores our continued commitment to supporting international efforts to enhance sustainability in this vital industry.”
Following his remarks, ICAO President Salvatore Sciacchitano said: “ICAO stands ready to build on the discussions and meetings held over the next three days to accelerate the global transition towards a safer, more secure, and sustainable civil aviation sector."
