After calling furloughed staff to the training centre or office in Dubai those on the list were taken into rooms as a group and told they were being laid off.

Many of the employees are said to have been at the company for more than five years.

Emirates confirmed the redundancies were taking place, saying “We have been doing everything possible to retain the talented people that make up our workforce for as long as we can. However given the significan impact that the pandemic hhas had on our business, we simply cannot sustain excess resources and have to right-size our workforce in line with our reduced operations.”

It is understood that 600 pilots were let go today with further cuts to follow in a week’s time.
