Simaero installs Embraer 190 simulator at its Johannesburg facility http://www.timesaerospace.aero/news/training/simaero-installs-embraer-190-simulator-at-its-johannesburg-facility

The simulator will be certified by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) and is expected to be ready for training in the second half of 2025.

Meeting Africa’s Growing Demand for E190 Training

The integration of the E190 simulator aligns with the evolving needs of Simaero’s clients, many of whom are transitioning from the Embraer ERJ 145 to the more modern E190 aircraft.African carriers are increasingly switching their ERJ 145 fleets with the larger, more fuel-efficient E190 E-Series jets, while newer start-up airlines are opting for this model due to its extended range and ETOPS capabilities. This growing demand for the E-Seriesj et has created a pressing need for high-quality simulator training in Africa.

The introduction of the E190 full-flight simulator at Simaero’s Johannesburg Training Center will enhance training opportunities for external clients in South Africa. As the largest independent aviation training facility in the region, this expansion strengthens Simaero’s role in supporting the continent’s shift to the latest Embraer fleets on short-to-medium-haul routes, establishing Johannesburg as a key hub for both local and international airlines.

Strengthening Johannesburg asa Leading Training Hub

This expansion builds on the recent relocation of a Bombardier CRJ 200/700 full-flight simulator, solidifying Simaero’s Johannesburg Training Center as a leading hub for regional aircraft training. With upcoming CRJ and E190 comprehensive training programs, from initial type-rating to command upgrade, the center will offer high-quality solutions tailored to Africa’s evolving aviation sector.

"Our Johannesburg centre is evolving into a key training hub for regional aviation in Africa. The introduction of the E190 simulator, alongside the recently added CRJ 200/700, allows us to offer a full range of training solutions tailored to the needs of African airlines," affirmed Keith Roseveare, general manager of Simaero South Africa.

Accelerating Expansion Through Strategic Collaboration with HNCA

This milestone stems from a strategic partnership between Henan Aviation Investment Management Company (HNCA), the Bank of China, and Simaero. In 2024, Simaero and HNCA launched China’s first cross-border simulator operating lease business, designed to accelerate the relocation and acquisition of training devices. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between training demand and available simulator capacity, ensuring airlines worldwide have agile and cost-effective access to the latest training technologies.

"By working closely with HNCA, we are setting new industry standards for the rapid deployment of simulators. This project highlights our commitment to supporting the aviation sector’s growth in Africa and beyond," said Nicolas Mouté, CEO of Simaero.

The Embraer E190 full-flight simulator will be relocated from China to Simaero’s Johannesburg training center in the coming weeks by Simaero Engineering’s expert teams. It is planned to be certified by SACAA and ready for training in the second half of 2025.

The new programme builds on the success of the UAE National Cadet Programme launched last year which received more than 2000 applications.

Honouring the 145 nationalities within Etihad, the airline has rewarded 10 current staff members with the unique opportunity to make lateral career moves and embark on a full scholarship with Etihad’s two-year Employee Cadet Pilot programme.

Dr Nadia Bastaki, chief people and corporate affairs officer, Etihad Airways, said: "Our growth strategy is driven by the increasing demand for skilled pilots. The Employee Cadet Pilot Programme plays a pivotal role in ensuring the next generation is equipped with the world-class skills and expertise needed to excel in the ever-evolving aviation industry.

“As an employer of choice in the UAE, we wanted to give opportunity to our employees to make lateral career moves within Etihad with fully paid scholarships.”

The ten members of staff are currently serving in different roles across the organisation including Cabin Crew and Flight Dispatch and will begin cadet pilot training once formalities have been completed. Etihad’s diverse workforce is represented in the eight different nationalities that make up the 10 candidates chosen.

ABU Dhabi: GANS signs three new agreements on the last day of GISS http://www.timesaerospace.aero/news/events/abu-dhabi-gans-signs-three-new-agreements-on-the-last-day-of-giss

“The Rwanda agreement is around aviation collaboration focused on training, they’re looking to build capacity with their own training facility, said David Adebiyi, chief commercial officer.

Adebiyi said GANS was in conversation with AFCAC, which Rwanda was involved in.

“Rwanda doesn’t just want this to be an agreement between GANS and Rwanda, they want to make sure that AFCAC is involved in the conversation too.  Rwanda doesn’t want to just serve their own training needs, but also serve the needs of other African countries too,” he said.

GANS also signed an MoU with Kenya, also building on capacity.

“We already have a contract with Kenya, delivering English language training in Nairobi, that was on the back of GISS in Istanbul, so it’s basically continuing that collaboration with them,” said Adebiyi.

“Kenya is a Centre of Excellence - they support a number of a number of African countries, but they don’t have enough capacity – so when they struggle with capacity, they tend to work with us.”

The third contract was between GANS and Guyana to deliver a training conversion for their air traffic controllers.

“They have moved into what is known as Approach Surveillance, which is a type of air traffic service.  We have just developed the training courses at our training centre,” explained Adebiyi.

ABU DHABI: Rwanda’s aviation training centre expands http://www.timesaerospace.aero/news/events/abu-dhabi-rwandas-aviation-training-centre-expands

Speaking at the Global Implementation Support Symposium (GISS), Silas Udahemuka, director general of the Rwandan Civil Aviation Authority (RCAA), said that RCATIC “aims to become one of the largest aviation training institutions in Africa, reinforcing Rwanda’s role in shaping the future of the industry.” The training facility, which was inaugurated in June 2024, marks the beginning of a new era in aviation training in Rwanda. In November it was awarded the ICAO TRAINAIR Plus Bronze membership and today the accreditation will be formally recognised during a signing at GISS.

With ICAO accreditation seen as key to accessing global expertise, the centre which already trains an average of 25 students from across Africa per month is expanding its reach. As Rwanda’s aviation sector grows, the centre is also increasing its regional outreach to strengthen safety compliance and workforce development.

Addressing the wider adoption of new and emerging technologies within the industry Udahemuka added, "There is no better time than now to integrate innovation into training, which is why our institution is named the Civil Aviation Training and Innovation Centre. We firmly believe that for any aviation organisation to succeed, it must embrace artificial intelligence and cutting-edge technologies including unmanned aircraft systems".

Commenting on the valuable platform ICAO’s symposium provides for the RCAA to learn, share experiences and engage with global aviation leaders, Udahemuka added: “Our main objective is to align efforts toward sustainable aviation goals, particularly in reducing carbon emissions, advancing sustainable aviation fuels and exploring innovative solutions that will shape the future of the industry. This event provides a perfect platform to advance these goals.”

In addition to its signing with ICAO, RCATIC is also anticipating a number of collaborative agreements to be signed this week with other training organisations.

The safe space...

IMAGE: ASPC

A place where people enjoy learning about aviation safety and get equipped to champion it: in Rwanda, the AviAssist Foundation and its partners are creating such a space for Africa’s aviation safety community.

AviAssist, an NGO, is dedicated to promoting and enhancing aviation safety in Africa since 1995. It supports the safety oversight and safety promotion functions from civil aviation authorities, airlines, airports, ground handlers and many other aviation actors. And now, it initiated Africa’s first physical safety promotion centre.

The AviAssist Safety Promotion Centre (ASPC)-Rwanda is a hub for learning, researching and experiencing aviation safety. For the current and next generations of Africa’s aviation professionals.

“Training, education, and safety communication are important elements of safety promotion”, AviAssist board member Harriet Nakazwe explained: “The mission of our first ASPC is to inspire Africa’s changing and growing workforce to advance the continent’s safety culture.”

The ASPC-Rwanda was inspired by examples in Tokyo and Seattle. It combines lessons from significant aviation (near) accidents with the history of aviation safety. The centre works with exhibits that provide background on lessons learned from aviation tragedies in the past.

Tours of ASPC-Rwanda for professionals are available on appointment. Visitors are actively encouraged to share their perspectives on safety on the displays, for further inspiration of other visitors in the future.

The ASPC-Rwanda finds a home at the University of Rwanda. “Rwanda’s aviation industry is growing rapidly”, Dr Ignace Gatare of the College of Science and Technology of the University of Rwanda explained. “Our university is keen to support that growth with courses such as our envisioned aerospace engineering course.

“The ASPC-Rwanda gives Rwanda, with the ambition to be a knowledge-based economy, the opportunity to play a leading role in pushing the boundaries of aviation safety beyond mere regulatory compliance”.

AviAssist director Tom Kok added: “We already are serving seasoned professionals in Africa’s aviation industry, but now we are excited to also work with aviation students and youngsters interested in a career in aviation. We are doing that with universities and vocational training institutes, but also with associations such as the Young Aviators Club of Africa that performs outreach programs to secondary schools”.

Next to education, the ASPC-Rwanda will also perform research. At the moment, most data used in the African aviation industry that feed decisions on risk management, come from other continents; North America, Asia and Europe.

Christopher McGregor, chairman of the AviAssist board, said: “Home grown talents can fuel growth in safety data analysis. This can positively influence and develop safety risk management across the continent. Universities will play an important role in building a reliable data ecosystem.

“That’s why we are so pleased that our first AviAssist safety promotion centre is housed at the University of Rwanda. Decision makers can increasingly demand relevant information to lay the foundation for changes to procedures, policy making, budgeting and investment decisions.”

“The industry has a unique opportunity to help build universities and institutions in Africa that can deliver the next generation of safety researchers”, ASPC-Rwanda trainee Alain Dusingize pointed out.

“Institutions like the one I am coordinating here in Rwanda, will support capabilities of African universities to conduct safety research in a very cost-effective way.”

AviAssist director Tom Kok said: “African aviation is its own industry, with its own dignity. We must work together as an industry. Our ASPC will help to emphasise the importance of safety, by showing and discussing where we have been, where we are going, and why we must never be complacent in our pursuit of safety.”

Africa’s aviation industry is excited with the centre’s official opening in September 2025. Kok added: “With our first ASPC in Rwanda, we want to strengthen the personal commitment to safety of each African aviation professional. The opening allows the continent a unique opportunity to enhance its safety culture.”
