Training http://www.timesaerospace.aero/ en Thu, 19 Dec 2024 11:29:56 +0000 Air India orders 34 trainer aircraft for its flying school http://www.timesaerospace.aero/news/training/air-india-orders-34-trainer-aircraft-for-its-flying-school

The airline placed the order as it prepares to start training of cadet pilots at South Asia’s largest Flying Training Organisation (FTO) coming up in Amravati, Maharashtra by the second half of 2025, post regulatory approvals.

The FTO is a leap forward in Air India’s commitment to bolster its training infrastructure as part of its Vihaan.AI transformation program and cultivate a pipeline of pilots as it expands its fleet, becoming self-reliant.

The trainer aircraft, due for delivery starting 2025, are equipped with glass cockpits, G1000 avionics systems and Jet A1 engines that will ensure advanced training for aspiring pilots.

The FTO is coming up at Amravati’s Belora airport and will target to graduate 180 commercial pilots every year.

“The new FTO is a strategic move to exponentially expand our training infrastructure and our commitment to building a self-reliant ecosystem of qualified pilots for both Air India and the Indian aviation industry. With this order of 34 trainer aircraft to support South Asia’s largest Flying Training Organisation, we are delighted to be playing a part in building the aviation infrastructure India needs as one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets and to support the government’s vision for an Atmanirbhar Bharat,” said Sunil Bhaskaran, Director, Aviation Academy, Air India.

As part of its commitment to invest in aviation training, Air India opened its new Aviation Training Academy, spread over 600,000 sq ft, the largest in South Asia, in Gurugram. It is also the first airline in India to announce the setting up of an FTO that will complement Air India’s commitment to power India’s aviation ecosystem in the coming years.

flydubai receives CAR 147 training certification http://www.timesaerospace.aero/news/training/flydubai-receives-car-147-training-certification

This enables it to run its in-house maintenance and engineering training and certification.

The CAR 147 training certification is a regulatory framework established by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) in the UAE, which allows the airline to provide approved training for aircraft maintenance engineers and technicians. The certification ensures that the training programmes meet specific standards and requirements set by the GCAA, aligning with international aviation standards and recommended practices.

Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, director general of the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), said: “Granting flydubai a maintenance training organisation approval represents a major advancement in the educational infrastructure to train and qualify skilled professionals in the civil aviation sector. This initiative also strengthens our national capabilities in this field, aligning with the highest international standards.”

Al Suwaidi continued: “It is essential for organisations to keep pace with rapid changes in the aviation industry by updating their training programmes and enhancing their capabilities. By enabling the airline to prepare highly qualified engineers and technicians, flydubai will significantly contribute to the aviation sector in the country and provide the necessary competencies in this vital field.”

Ghaith Al Ghaith, chief executive officer at flydubai, said: “we are very proud to receive the CAR 147 approval which represents another milestone in flydubai’s journey. Underscoring our continued commitment to investing in our in-house capabilities, the certification will also help in building a solid foundation for further growth as part of our role in supporting Dubai’s economic and aviation vision.”

Ethiopian's University in a class of its own

IMAGE: Ethiopian Airlines

The Ethiopian Aviation University was established as a small aviation training centre in 1956 in the premise of the headquarters of Ethiopian Airlines in Addis Ababa.

The aviation training centre has been training the pilots, technicians, cabin crew and airline sales agents required for the operation of Ethiopian Airlines. The centre has played a crucial role in the success of the national airline by providing well-trained staff.

Almost all the senior executives of the airline, including former CEO Girma Wake, Tewolde Gebremariam and the current CEO, Mesfin Tasew, have been trained at this once small aviation training centre.

With a humble beginning in the 1950s with few instructors, the aviation training centre expanded and grew steadily over the consecutive decades.

When Ethiopian Airlines transformed into an aviation group and unveiled its ambitious Vision2025 growth strategy, the airline made a whopping more than 100 million USD investment in the centre to elevate it into a fully-fledged aviation academy.

The fast-growing national airline demand for aviation professionals increased drastically. To meet the growing requirement the airline invested heavily in acquiring dozens of trainer aircraft, flight simulators, and cabin crew training mock aircraft, plus built facilities such as class rooms, dormitories, a dining hall, auditorium and library.

Five modern buildings comprising various facilities were built and the aviation academy became one of the eight profit centres of Ethiopian Airlines Aviation Group.

“Human resource development was one of the five pillars of our Vision 2025 growth strategy,” Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew said.

“Human resources has always been our priority agenda even when we were a small airline,” he added.

To cope up with the fast growth of the airline and to meet the future development goals the aviation academy had to grow proportionally. Accordingly, the aviation academy was transformed into a full-fledged aviation university in 2023.

The Ethiopian Aviation University now has a pilot training school, aircraft maintenance technicians school, cabin crew training school, commercial and ground services training school, leadership and career development training school, school of aerospace engineering, and a school of travel, tourism and hospitality.

Emirates Flight Training Academy signs deal with with Egnatia Aviation http://www.timesaerospace.aero/news/training/emirates-flight-training-academy-signs-deal-with-with-egnatia-aviation

The partnership marks a brand-new chapter in EFTA’s international journey as it sets the academy well on its way to achieving European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) accreditation in early 2025.

EASA certification is recognised globally in the aviation industry. The certification is mandatory to fly European-registered aircraft or to work for European airlines and opens doors to outstanding career opportunities worldwide.

All ATPL* graduates requiring an EASA licence must complete Multi-Engine Instrument Rating (ME/IR) in an Approved Training Organisation  within the European Union. Thanks to the partnership, EFTA’s international cadets can undertake the additional 10-hour programme with Egnatia Aviation in Greece.

On graduating from EFTA, these cadets will receive both a GCAA** and an EASA licence.  Once EFTA receives EASA approval, the academy will incorporate the agency’s approved curriculum in both ground school and flying programmes.

Having EASA accreditation under its belt marks a huge opportunity for EFTA as it looks to go global and appeal to a wider demographic. .

Captain Abdulla Al Hammadi, divisional vice president EFTA, explained the significance of the partnership: “EFTA’s next growth trajectory will have a major impact as we are set to provide a strong pipeline to an industry strapped for international pilot talent. The partnership with Egnatia Aviation marks a huge milestone in that growth journey. EASA ATO accreditation, our first-class infrastructure and futuristic learning technologies, along with being based in Dubai, one of the world’s largest aviation hubs, is the perfect combination for attracting the best talent to the academy.

It’s a significant stepping stone for the academy’s international cadets as they can now obtain the globally recognised EASA licence. We are extremely impressed with Egnatia Aviation’s quality, standards and product. We look forward to a long and fruitful partnership that will open new avenues and empower the next generation of pilots.”

George Triantafyllidis, chief commercial officer Egnatia Aviation said: “Cadets on the path to becoming EASA certified can look forward to beginning the course in 2025 and be ready to conduct their ME/IR in 2026 at Egnatia Aviation. Once completed, they will graduate with best-in-class knowledge, skills and expertise from a high quality ATO, in line with EU aviation standards.”

Cadets are back with Etihad http://www.timesaerospace.aero/news/training/cadets-are-back-with-etihad

The UAE flag-carrier suspended the programme during the pandemic but is now restoring it, to ensure it has enough trained personnel on its future flight decks.

Unlike the previous courses, which saw youngsters undertaking university before starting the course, the revived project will open up the chance to become a pilot to high school graduates.

“We wanted to make the programme as available as possible, and make it experience-based, so we ensure that we attract young talent,” said Dr Nadia Bastaki, Etihad’s chief people and corporate affairs officer.

The new course attracted 3,000 applications and a selection process is under way, with around 60 people starting the cadet course in January.

Ground school, followed by flight training in Spain, will take 18 months to two years. After simulator training, the young pilots will become second officers on Etihad’s short-haul Airbus A320 fleet. The relatively short sectors mean that the young pilots will get more practice in take-offs and landings.

Etihad’s rapid expansion means that career progression can be rapid, with young pilots potentially reaching captain status in eight to 10 years, said Bastaki.
